What the law asks for

The Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006 makes the owner or occupier of a building responsible for keeping its fire prevention and life safety measures in good working order.

Twice a year, in January and July, they must submit a certificate in Form B, issued by a licensed agency, to the fire department, confirming those systems have been maintained.

Which systems are covered

  • Fire alarm and detection systems
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Hydrant and sprinkler systems
  • Emergency lighting and exit signs
  • Public address systems, where required

How to prepare for the inspection

  1. Keep the weekly test logbook up to date.
  2. Clear any panel faults and re-enable disabled zones.
  3. Replace expired extinguishers and worn-out batteries.
  4. Check no detector was covered or removed during interior work.
  5. Keep drawings and earlier certificates ready to show.

What happens if you skip it

The fire department can inspect premises and issue notices, and in serious cases it can seal the premises until the measures are put right. Insurers may also question a claim when maintenance records are missing.

Key takeaways

  • Form B is due twice a year, in January and July.
  • It must come from a licensed agency.
  • A clean logbook and a fault-free panel make inspection simple.
